About the AD-SMART Trial

AD-SMART: Alzheimer’s Disease Systematic Multi-Arm Adaptive Randomised Trial

A trial that will test multiple treatments at different times aiming to find one that can improve the symptoms of the disease or slow down the progression in people with Alzheimer’s Disease.

What is this study about?

AD SMART is set to revolutionise the way we test treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease. Our trial design is smarter and a more efficient approach that could deliver transformative treatments up to three times faster, bridging hope to millions of people affected by AD and reshaping the future of dementia research.

Who can take part?

Adults with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease who meet the trial’s eligibility criteria.

What is different about the AD-SMART trial?

AD-SMART is the first AD trial to use a trial design called multi-arm multi-stage (MAMS). There are several advantages in using these methods:

  • Multiple treatments can be tested at the same time against a shared control group (i.e. multi-arm).
  • The multi-stage structure allows for promising treatments to move forward without delay, as it avoids the need to start a new trial from scratch.
  • Results are continuously being reviewed throughout the trial, not just at the end, allowing for quicker decisions.
  • Treatments that do not show early of benefit can be stopped, focusing on those with most potential.

AD-SMART also aims to be a more efficient trial by testing repurposed treatments (i.e already in use for other conditions). Using repurposed treatments means there is already an understanding of their safety and possible side effects. Therefore, this trial can focus on whether they are effective and beneficial for patients with Alzheimer’s Disease.
